Civic and Community Groups may resume meeting at the Odd Road Community Center. Group meetings and reservations may have up to 60 people in attendance. FREE! LEARN TO PLAY PICKLE BALL WORKSHOP FREE! Adults
Pickle ball is a paddle sport created for all ages and skill levels. The game resembles tennis and plays on a smaller court with a wooden paddle and small ball with holes. This workshop is designed to get you playing and enjoying the game! Do you want to learn how to play this fun sport that is a lot like tennis? Do you enjoy socializing with other adults? Join us for these sessions to learn all about the new and upcoming sport of Pickle ball. Saturday, October 25 at 9am-11am. Bring a friend, and a pickle ball paddle if you have one, but not required. Location: Tennis Courts near PHS- Far Courts for pickle ball. Learn the rules of the game, scoring and more. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.Instructor: George Stephenson Class is free, we just ask you pre-register at Community Recreation at least 3 days in advance of each workshop. FIREARMS SAFETY COURSE
(This course will allow you to apply for your concealed carry permit in Virginia)Learn firearms safety, law and familiarization of handguns and ammunition, how to handle a weapon safely, and laws regarding use of firearms in self-defense. This one evening course will cover many do’s and don’ts for carrying a weapon for self-defense. As part of the course those students who wish to later apply for a concealed handgun permit may take a written test, and upon successful completion of the test, a certificate will be provided that will allow them to apply for a Virginia Concealed Weapons Permit with the local court. No gun ownership required. If you have a gun do not bring it to class until the instructor instructs you to do so. Class open to anyone age 21 or older. This course meets one evening. Time: 6-9:30pm. Location: Municipal Building Cost per student: $55 residents/$65 non-residents. Each course limited to 6 students. Must register 5 days in advance of the course. Choose the date when registering: October 26.
NOVEMBER Art by the Month for kids ages 7-12
Dates: 3, 10, 17 from 4:30-6pm Weaving and Textiles Arts: Fibers and fabrics will be showcased each week in our projects. A variety of skills including quilting, macramé, embroidery, weaving, knitting, and crocheting techniques are part of the in the class-created artworks. We will utilize string, yarn, fabric, and beads to create fabulous wearable and decorative original works of art. All materials included. Cost: $60.00(Non-residents additional $10.00)
December Art by the Month for kids ages 7-12
December Dates: 1, 8, 15 Sculpture: Through the processes of experimenting and working with clay, fabric, metal, and paper, students will learn fundamental sculpting techniques, and make projects using their understanding of three dimensional art making. All materials included: Cost: $60.00 residents.(Non-residents additional $10.00)
The Great Turkey Hunt- Go Get Hunting! Starting November 1.
Find our 8 wooden cut out turkeys in our City facilities from November 1-November 19. When you have located a turkey simply scan the code on the back using your phone and enter to win a turkey for your Thanksgiving or a $25 gift certificate to Food Lion.The more turkeys you find the more options to win by entering on the back with the special code. Clues will be posted on the Parks & Recreation Facebook Page starting November 1. Happy Hunting and Gobble til’ You Wobble!
GINGERBREAD HOUSE WORKSHOP
Ages 6-13 Students will decorate their own Gingerbread House! We will provide ALL of the candy and icing for construction! All houses are completely edible so you can make a perfect centerpiece for the holidays! Please note any food allergies with registration. All Gingerbread Houses decorated are taken home. Participants will not share items, & all participants should be prepared to wear a mask as needed. All work stations will be distanced. Cost $20 residents/$30 non-residents Must register 5 days in advance.Each class is limited to only 10 participants. Adult Class - Painting with watercolors
PAINTING-WITH WATERCOLORSThis course will introduce you to a variety of painting techniques using watercolor paints. Create works to learn how to layer washes of the same color to use shape and shading for highlights and shadows. Start at the very beginning and understand the basics of color mixing.
