City seeks residents to serve on Board of Equalization

City Seal Circular

The city is currently seeking citizens interested in serving on the Board of Equalization.  The Board of Equalization (BOE) is comprised of property owners in the city that have experience in real estate valuation and/or real estate marketing.  Those sitting on the BOE are appointed by the Circuit Court and attend training (virtual) from the Virginia State Taxation Board.  They are considered officers of the court and hear appeals from property owners on the court’s behalf.

The Board of Equalization has the authority to lower, raise or affirm any value under appeal and the Assessor is bound by law to uphold the findings of the Board.  Appellants are notified by mail of the BOE’s decisions which are considered final and can only be further appealed in the Circuit Court.

The projected dates for BOE Hearings are the first three weeks in May.  The training session for BOE members will be scheduled for Mid-April.  A stipend is associated with membership on the BOE, but the amount has not yet been established.  Interested parties can obtain a Board of Equalization Member Application from the City Website https://www.ci.poquoson.va.us/152/Boards-Commissions and emailed to kimberly.healy@poquoson-va.gov.
