The Investigations Division is divided into two areas of specialties: General Investigations, Special Investigations. The Investigations Division is a plainclothes and occasionally an undercover assignment that investigates major crimes, processes crime scenes, and concentrates resources on diverse problems such as burglaries, fraud, and narcotics. To better deal with narcotics issues, the Investigations Division currently has one detective, along with one Narcotics K-9, assigned to the Virginia State Police Narcotics Task Force.
The Narcotics K-9 is named "Rena", she is a German Shepard, that is certified by the Virginia Police Workdog Association. Prior to becoming certified "Rena" underwent a 12-week basic training program with her handler, and they both attend monthly refresher training.
