Appealing Assessments

The 2021 reassessment for FY 2022 appeal process will be accepting applications from April 19th until the close of business on April 30, 2021.  Applicants may come to the Assessor’s Office, located in City Hall to pick up an application or download the forms from the Assessor’s web page.  All applications that are mailed in and postmarked by April 30, 2021 will be accepted.  The Assessor will hold his hearings from May 10th-21st.  All applicants will be contacted confirming their appointment and hearing time.

The Assessor’s Office will also accept applications for the Board of Equalization until the close of business day on July 2, 2021.  These applications will also be found on the Assessor’s web page and in the City Assessor’s Office.  All applicants will be contacted confirming their appointment and hearing time.  The Board of Equalization will hold appeal hearings beginning on July 12th and ending on July 23rd.

For both residential and commercial properties, if there is a person(s) or agency representing the property owner during the hearings, an Agent Authorization form must be filled out, notarized and submitted with the appeal forms. Please note with each application submitted that a separate Agent Authorization form must be submitted, one for the Assessor and one for the Board of Equalization.

In following the CDC and the Virginia Department of Health’s COVID guidelines and recommendations, the Assessor and Board of Equalization will hold all hearings through Zoom or telephone conference.  If any resident or property owner requests an in person hearing, the Assessor and Board of Equalization members require that a mask be worn and the 6 feet of social distancing be maintained.
