Brown-lid Recycling Cart Collection to Begin December 15, 2025
At the end of the emergency contract with TFC, the City was hopeful that the contractor would retrieve their recycle carts, however that has not happened. Public Works will now work to pick up the abandoned TFC carts. The City is appreciative of TFC for agreeing to continue recycling collection these last two months so that there would be no break in service for residents.
On Monday, 12/15/25, city staff will begin the process of collecting the brown-lid carts. To ensure that carts will be picked up, please
have the empty cart accessible near the roadway. Public Works will only service each street once to collect carts.
Staff appreciate your patience, as this task could take several weeks to complete. Residents are able to drop off their TFC cart at the former Police Station on Poquoson Avenue if they do not want to wait for the cart to be picked up by Public Works.
If you have questions or concerns, please contact Public Works at 757-868-3598.
UPDATE TO CURBYSIDE RECYCLING SERVICES AS OF NOVEMBER 19, 2025
The City of Poquoson, through the Virginia Peninsula Public Service Authority (VPPSA), has entered into a multi-year contract with Republic Services starting December 1, 2025. November will be the last month of the current emergency contract with TFC utilizing the brown lid carts, with the last blue recycling pickup scheduled for Friday, 11/21/25 and last red recycling pickup scheduled for Saturday, 11/29/25.
Republic Services will continue with the existing recycling schedule as noted on the City’s solid waste calendar, with no service interruptions.
Through a contractor, Republic Services will deliver new blue 95-gallon recycling carts to homes in the City’s solid waste program Saturday, 11/29/25 through Thursday, 12/4/25.
Residents should immediately use the blue Republic carts after their last November pickup date. Any recycling collected in the old brown lid TFC carts must be transferred to the new blue carts.
The City is communicating with TFC on the removal of the brown lid recycling carts. The carts will either be collected by TFC on your last November recycling day, or they could be collected at a later date by a contractor hired by the City.
Please do not dispose of the brown lid carts and please leave them where they are accessible to be picked up.
For questions or concerns, please contact the Public Works Department at 757-868-3598.
